Best months: July & August
Coho salmon, also known as silvers, are one of the favorites on the Nushagak River. We are typically the only lodge open during this time of year on The Nush so we practically have the whole river to ourselves. It’s mostly our fleet and a few locals and fly-in anglers so we typically have our choice of several productive spots.
Silver salmon hit hard, rip line, and put on a memora le acrobatic show until you tire them out long enough to get them in the boat or to the bank. Silver salmon action on the Nushagak can be absolutely incredible, especially when fresh schools enter the system during peak season in early to mid August.
The current Alaska Department of Fish and Game limit is 5 coho salmon per person per day on the Nushagak River and guests regularly take home a full fish box. Silver salmon fishing methods that we employ on the Nushagak River include drifting flies, casting spinners, bouncing eggs or trolling plugs. Silver salmon on the Nushagak average 8- to 12 pounds. 13 to 15 pounds is a BIG silver on The Nush.
Some anglers find king salmon fishing to be their favorite, but others agree their preference is silvers. The best silver fishing traditionally occurs later in the season. Check out this story to learn more about fishing silvers with us.
While many anglers focus on the early summer runs, silver salmon fishing in Alaska offers a unique opportunity for those who prefer aggressive strikes and high-energy battles. Because our lodge remains operational into the late season, we provide a rare level of exclusivity on the Nushagak. The Coho are famous for their curiosity; unlike other species, they will often chase a lure or fly right to the boat’s edge. Our positioning on the lower river allows us to intercept these fish as they transition from the salt water, ensuring they are at their strongest and most acrobatic. This late-season window also provides a more tranquil atmosphere, allowing you to experience the Alaskan wilderness without the mid-summer crowds.
Choosing a specialized Alaska silver salmon fishing lodge means having access to guides who understand the specific “holding” behavior of late-season Coho. As the water temperatures begin to drop in August, silvers tend to stack up in the soft water behind submerged structures and in the mouth of small tributaries. For those interested in silver salmon fly fishing, this is the pinnacle of the sport. We utilize 8-weight rods with weighted streamers or “pink pollywogs” to trigger explosive surface strikes. Whether you are a seasoned pro or a beginner, the high volume of fish and the expert instruction provided at our lodge ensure that silver salmon fishing Alaska becomes a highlight of your angling career.
Request Dates and DetailsWhile they begin appearing in late July, the peak migration on the Nushagak typically occurs during the first two weeks of August.
Not at all. Silvers are arguably the best salmon species for fly fishing because they are aggressive and often strike surface patterns, which is much more forgiving for those learning the craft.
An 8-weight rod is the industry standard. It provides enough backbone to fight a 12-pound fish in current while remaining light enough for all-day casting.
Weighted spinners (like Blue Fox Vibrax), bright pink jigs, and topwater “wog” flies are incredibly effective due to the Coho’s aggressive predatory nature.
Many lodges close after the King run. We stay open because we believe the Coho run is one of the river’s best-kept secrets, offering high-volume action and total river solitude.
Yes. Coho are known for their “acrobatic” displays. It is common for a hooked silver to jump multiple times, often changing direction mid-air to try and throw the hook.
Yes. The current limit is 5 fish per day. We professionally process, vacuum seal, and flash-freeze your catch so it stays fresh for your return trip.
Generally, yes. The Nushagak stays relatively clear, and in the shallower sloughs and tributaries, sight-casting to pods of silver salmon is a common and thrilling technique.
August in Alaska can be rainy and cool. We recommend high-quality waterproof shells, synthetic base layers, and warm wading socks to stay comfortable during long days on the water.
While Kings offer brute strength and long runs, Silvers offer speed and agility. A Silver salmon fight is fast-paced and unpredictable, making it a favorite for light-tackle enthusiasts.
Silver salmon bring explosive strikes, acrobatic fights, and nonstop action—making late-season fishing on the Nushagak an experience like no other.
With limited anglers on the river and peak Coho action in August, this is your chance to enjoy Alaska fishing at its most exciting—and most exclusive.
