Add on Adventures when you Fish The Nush

What to do in Alaska is the question to ask yourself once you’ve made your salmon fishing plans at Nushagak River Adventures Lodge. Besides salmon fishing, there are several must-do adventures to experience in the 49th State. Here are our top recommendations on what to do in Alaska before or after you stay at our lodge on the Nushagak River.

Halibut Fishing

Fishing on the river is as enjoyable as it gets, but fishing in the ocean is a blast too and we recommend planning at least one day in the salt. You’ve come all this way, you may as well see as much of Alaska as possible. You could make a day trip out of it by taking a rental car to Whittier from Anchorage or add a multi-day excursion to the Kenai Peninsula. If the latter is your choice, the stunning drive can take you to a rental cabin on the Kenai River with a next-day charter trip planned from Ninilchik with Key-O’s Guide Service. Good friends of ours and superb ocean captions, it’s a great chance to put up some white fish fillets. You can take them to the local fish processor to vacuum pack, freeze, and ship home.

Bear Viewing

You may get the chance to see bears while out fishing the river, but if you want to get a little closer and observe a bunch of bears, there are a couple ways to do it. From Lake Hood in Anchorage, companies like Trail Ridge Air can fly you to Redoubt Mountain Lodge. This is best added on when you visit us in silver season since the bears are in the rivers then feeding on remaining sockeye and inbound silvers. Another option is to charter a flight from Dillingham with Tikchik Air to Brooks Falls before or after your stay with us.

Tour Anchorage

You may opt to build in a couple days to check out Anchorage and the surrounding areas. In Anchorage, the Alaska Native Heritage Museum, Anchorage Museum, and the Alaska Aviation Air Museum are all attractions worth touring. Walking around downtown is interesting, as well, and there are plenty of visitor-related businesses for you to seek souvenirs, tours, and more. There are some great restaurants in Anchorage that showcase the Greatland at its finest. Some fine dining establishments worth checking out are Kincaid Grill, Bridge Seafood, and Club Paris. For more casual dining, 49th State Brewing Co, Moose’s Tooth, or Bear’s Tooth are good options.

Day Trips from Anchorage

There are some fun day fishing trips you can take from Anchorage if you are with diehard anglers. For those that want a variety of experiences, you can head south from Anchorage to visit Portage Glacier. While you’re down that way you can also tour the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. There are some good restaurants in Girdwood, including Chair 5, to round out the day.

Another option is to head north to visit a charming Alaska town called Talkeetna. Take a flightseeing tour around Denali with a local air service. You can also do this right from Lake Hood in Anchorage. Again we recommend Trail Ridge Air who offer several different flightseeing options.

What to do in Alaska can amount to an enormous list, it is a huge state with a lot to see and do, in addition to fishing the greatest king and silver salmon river around. Above are just some of the fun add-on excursions you can take on your Alaska trip.
