Flying to Alaska brings many anglers from across the world to the best angling destination in North America. And when you fly to the Nushagak River, you will be experiencing the very best of king salmon angling in the Great Land. No other destination in Alaska combines a prolific Chinook run with plenty of fishable water like the Nushagak. Later in the season when the coho arrive, you can expect tons of fish and few anglers. That’s a fine combination for epic angling.

2020 was filled with new issues when it came to flying to Alaska. After early uncertainty, the state established guidelines for travelers. They can be found here: https://covid19.alaska.gov/travelers/. Of paramount importance, travelers need a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of entering Alaska.

For some, this was an issue in 2020. Tests became harder to procure, and results were often lagging beyond the necessary 72-hour window. Travelers who did not have test results were forced to self quarantine until results were received, and in the unfortunate event that a positive test result was returned, then that traveler was required to self quarantine for two weeks at their expense. Since that is a scenario that should be avoided, we recommend that you find a service similar to what is offered at Walgreens. At certain locations, they offer a drive-through testing that you can schedule 3-6 days in advance and results are returned within a few hours. Check here for options: https://www.walgreens.com/findcare/covid19/testing. Other companies offer a similar service so check near you.

Additionally, a range of companies are now offering at-home testing solutions. Check with these companies in advance to ascertain if they can deliver results in the requisite timeframe before flying to Alaska. Some that the state of Alaska recognizes includes:

Before flying to Alaska, travelers are required to submit a Travel Declaration here: https://www.alaska.covidsecureapp.com. In addition to providing details about your trip, this is where you post your negative test results. We advise that you bring a paper copy of the declaration and test results as backup.

Once you arrive in the state, use best practices for limiting exposure to COVID-19. Wear a mask, stay 6 feet away from others not in your group, wash or sanitize your hands often and avoid touching your face until cleaning your hands. We all have reason to be hopeful that the vaccine in circulation will help subdue the pandemic, but we all should do our part to reduce the spread.
